Will I need two coats of Paint? ALWAYS

There are advertisements for paint all the time that talk about covering in one coat!  What a laugh!  To get a great paint job two light coats will usually do the trick.  Unless…

Not Happy

you get pure white and try covering over grease, water spots, fly specs(poo) and etc.  then 2 coats aren’t enough.  That is me looking like I was about ready to strangle the paint salesman.  I knew it wouldn’t cover,  but after 2 coats on the trim and the house still needing another coat – I wasn’t happy.  We just bit the bullet and bought more paint and came back another day to finish.  The house ended up looking great but here’s a reminder – paint does not cover in one coat.

needs another coat – crap!

So don’t go to home depot and buy expensive behr paint with the primer included…that’s a gimmick!  To steal your money – people fall for this all the time.  2 coats of paint required – sometimes 3.  Expensive paint does not change this fact.   Also do not use pure white ever!  Always choose something with a little tint in it – like Swiss coffee – a very popular “off” white

OK we finished and we had another happy customer!

Complete – she looks good!

Colors, Colors, Colors

paint-buckets-300x234How do you pick the right color scheme?  When you finally decide its time for a paint job you want to make sure you get your money’s worth and when someone sees the exterior of your home, they say “wow, that looks awesome.”

Once I lived near a guy that painted his exterior in a baby blue color.  It looked horrible.   He got so sick of people telling him that the house was really BLUE, that he put a sign up on the front of his home that said in large letters…”YES- IT IS BLUE,  SO WHAT?”  Eventually, he had to break down and repaint the house.   The guys at the paint store can help you with the colors and make sure you pick the most popular colors at the time.

If you see a building or a house where you like the color scheme and then tell your painting contractor about it,  the contractor can match the color for you.  Then your house will be the color of something you like and can be proud of.

Wallpaper Is Cool

wallpaper1In the early days of my decorating career, I was wallpapering on almost every job.  People loved it.  Sometimes just one wall.  Sometimes every wall in the house.  Sometimes even ceilings.  For the last 10- 15 years wallpaper has been a dead business- until recently where things have really begun to happen again.  We have done several large murals in retail chains.  Now we are getting calls from home owners who are catching the wallpaper bug. Cool… I love wallpaper.  Check out this link a video of a mural we did in a grocery chain.

Cabinets are Us!

What does it take to refinish cabinets?  When a person thinks about refinishing they have images of sanding and stripping the old finish off and starting over with bare wood. Ha.  Done that!  Too much work and really more expensive than buying new cabinets.

We have developed a technique we call shading.  The process involves the following:

  • Clean and lightly sand cabinets
  • apply a wood colored factory undercoater
  • apply an antiquing gel
  • apply several coats of semi transparent colored lacquer
  • apply clear coat finish

and that’s it.  A lot of work and skill involved – plus the right equipment.  Must be sprayed – not brushed – this is not paint – it is lacquer

Painting is not just painting

drywall 3What The?

So what happens when you get a small hole in the drywall?  Do you just slap some paint over it and all is well?   Not so fast.  In this picture here paint isn’t gonna help much is it?   Here is what you have to do.  Get some drywall – take a piece into Home Depot and they’ll help you get the right size.  Then cut a piece to fit in the hole.  You use drywall mud and drywall tape to hold it in place.  That is the first coat.  Wait for it to dry and using a trowel smooth out a second coat. Then sand smooth and apply a third coat.  Then texture…then FINALLY paint.  At least 2 coats.  Its a lot of work but if you want to learn something new and save some money, you can do it yourself.   Some painting contractors can handle this repair others can’t.  Armadillo Brothers Paint Company does routine drywall repairs everyday.  Its just part of what we do.  If you live in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe or Queen Creek,  you can call (480)359-8577   or go to www.armadillobros.com for more information.
